Chapter Thirteen

Thomas

‘Can you see them?’ Summer asked as she shifted in her seat.

I squinted through the windshield and caught a glimpse of Miranda’s red Ford Fiesta as she indicated a few cars ahead of us. ‘They just took a right,’ I said.

Miranda and her friend had jumped inside the car and set off down the road not long after leaving the shop. My heart pounded as we rushed along the street, racing to get to my Austin Healey and follow after them. Summer was right to be suspicious. I’d never seen a shiftier-looking pair. They’d huddled together in whispers, and glanced around, checking to see if anyone was watching them every chance they got. It’s a good thing, Summer and I were used to blending into the shadows. As witches, you’d think they’d have developed the same ability, but apparently, subtlety isn’t included in the standard witchcraft starter kit.

I accelerated through the city, speeding through the narrow streets with my eyes focused on the car ahead.

‘I think it’s pretty clear they’re not out for a leisurely drive,’ Summer said and flashed me a smile.

Soon it became clear they were heading towards the harbour. After around ten minutes, they pulled into a car park next to Phoenix Wharf, and exited the car before slipping through an entrance at the bottom of a ramp. I eased off the accelerator, and slowed, moving past the car park a short distance before pulling to a stop.

‘What is this place?’ Summer asked.

‘I think it’s the Redcliffe Caves. Larry mentioned coming here once for some cinema screening, remember?’

‘I remember. The horror movie.’ Summer shuddered, making me smile. She wasn’t one for watching scary movies. ‘We’d better find somewhere to park.’

Redcliffe Caves were a series of man made tunnels, originally dug out in the Middle Ages, with further excavation in the 17th-19th centuries. They were really mines, not caves, but the name stuck. Over the centuries they had been used as a place of worship, a secret rendezvous point for local guilds, and air-raid shelters as well as storage facilities during World War II. Now, they were a popular tourist attraction. Though, you wouldn’t believe it; the place was practically deserted.

I parked the car, and we walked towards the entrance. I stopped. My throat felt dry and I needed something to drink. ‘We just passed a pub. The Colosseum, I think,’ I said and linked my arm around Summer whilst pulling her in for a side hug. ‘Let’s grab a pint and maybe some food. I can’t remember the last time we just drank a beer and just chatted.’

Summer squinted her eyes and looked at me before shaking her head. ‘That might be because you don’t drink alcohol,’ she said.

‘Yeah, that’s right. Maybe we should try, or we could go home for a nap.’

Summer turned to face me and placed her hand on my cheek. I felt a flush of warmth against my skin as she drew from the power of the Fir and activated the Ailm tattoo on her arm.
